Monday February 16, 2015 – Ushuaia, Argentina

We got up before 7 am to see the glaciers along the inland passageway.  Beautiful glaciers of different sizes and colors.  One named for France and one named for Holland.  We took pictures and had coffee.  Tim went to work out in the gym.  We are expected to arrive in Ushuaia before noon.  Tim was supposed to go horseback riding but they cancelled that so we’ll explore Ushuaia on our own.

The arrival into Ushuaia via the ship was spectacular.  Snow-covered peaks as a backdrop to the small town rising up the hill.  There were whale, dolphin, and penguin in the water.  And it was FREEZING cold.  We went to the Lounge and watched the final approach.  Pretty spectacular.  It started raining as we were docking but that didn’t last long.  The weather is very changeable here.

It had snowed the night before and the mountains above Ushuaia were snow-covered.  Spectacular!

We returned to the ship late afternoon and napped and relaxed.  The ship leaves Ushuaia tonight at 8 pm bound for Port Stanley, Falkland Islands.  We understand that the ship has to leave Argentinian waters and sail into Chilean waters before it can go to the Falklands.  There must be some hard feelings still between Argentina and the UK.  Leaving the Falklands we have to go to Uruguay before we can then go back to Argentina!!!!

We dressed and went for cocktails at 6:30 and then had a light dinner in the Terrace Café since we had such a large filling lunch.

Tonight the show was a comedian and magic act – Rory Johnston and Murphy the Wonder Dog!  Hmmm!We were originally going to have lunch on the ship but decided to go into town for a nice lunch.  We left the ship about 12:15 and walked around looking at the various restaurants and cafes.  We settled on Restaurant Tia Elvira on the waterfront.  Tim has king crab and I had a seafood casserole.  Both were absolutely wonderful.  We had a great bottle of Argentinian Malbec too.  It was so good.

We left the restaurant and explored the city of Ushuaia – and once again found that there wasn’t much there.  Most of the shops are closed either on Monday or until 3:30.  We tried to find the bar where we spent New Year’s Eve 2007-2008 but couldn’t find it.  We think they tore it down and rebuilt a restaurant there.  We had fun walking around.
